Step-by-step Student Sign-Up for NSFAS MastercardTM
The NSFAS MastercardTM means you can tap to pay.
What to do when you receive your card
Step 1:
SMS “Activate” followed by a space then the last 4 digits of your card to 31571.
Step 2:
Receive your PIN via SMS. Memorise your PIN, then delete the SMS.
Step 3:
Your card will be activated when you receive your first NSFAS bursary payment into the card.
When you receive your card:
- Sign the card immediately
- Change your PIN (see tab ‘How to Change your PIN)
- Keep your card safe
Step 1:
Dial 011 207 1600 and follow the voice instructions.
Step 2:
Select Option 2 then enter the 16-digit number located on the front of your card.
Step 3:
Select Option 1 to enter your ID or passport number when prompted.
Step 4:
Enter your new 4-digit PIN when prompted.
Step 5:
Re-enter your new PIN to confirm.
Call 0800 873 287 to get a replacement card, if you suspect fraud, or need assistance.

What to do when you receive your card
Treat your card like cash. Don’t lend it out and always keep it in sight.
Don’t share your PIN. Don’t write it down. Don’t carry your PIN with you.
Don’t share any personal information when you use your card, especially your PIN.
Keep an eye on your card when doing a transaction, and make sure you get it back after every purchase.
Check your receipts to make sure that they are correct.
Check your bank statement every month to ensure that you’ve been charged the right amounts.
